India eyes federal agency to tackle terror

NEW DELHI, April 23 (UPI) -- India is planning to put in place a mechanism allowing terror-related cases to be investigated by a federal agency.

Junior Interior Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal told Parliament Wednesday the government was considering setting up a central agency to enable the investigation of certain types of terrorism-related and other offenses having interstate and global linkages.

He said the government was holding discussions on the issue with state governments, adding the issue figured in the recent meeting of chief ministers on internal security.

"The ministry has clarified that the proposed mechanism envisages close coordination between all central and state agencies," Jaiswal said.
