Lack of funding threatens refugees in Chad

N'DJAMENA, Chad, April 15 (UPI) -- The United Nations is warning that a lack of funds for aid operations in Chad could force an already fragile security situation to deteriorate.

The world body is urgently calling on the international community to raise the needed funds to support the approximately 500,000 refugees in Chad. Officials say not even 20 percent of the requested $290 million has been delivered, the United Nations reported.

U.N. officials warn of the potential for devastating consequences that could result as aid dries up for the growing number of internally displace persons from Chad along with those who have been forced to flee neighboring Sudan and the Central African Republic because of rampant violence and instability in the region.

"Should our life-saving operations ever be interrupted, whether due to lack of funding or to insecurity, the current crisis would seriously deteriorate within a short period of time," Solofo Ramaroson of the U.N. Children's Fund said in a statement.
