India's ATS to seek custody of SIMI chief

NEW DELHI, April 15 (UPI) -- India's Anti-Terrorist Squad said it will seek custody of the arrested chief of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India.

ATS, set up by the government of Maharashtra state, said that Safdar Nagori, general secretary of SIMI, could reveal vital information. ATS and the crime branch of Mumbai police want to question him in connection with the 2006 serial bomb blasts in the city and have approached the courts to seek custody.

"We would apply to the court for Nagori's custody. We want his custody in connection with the banned group SIMI for our investigations. Even the crime branch and others will seek his custody and depending upon the priority of the case, custody will be given," said Hemant Karkare, joint commissioner of police who heads the ATS.

Police in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh arrested Nagori and 10 others in March in the industrial town of Indore. Arms were recovered during the arrest, police said.
