NEW DELHI, April 11 (UPI) -- Police in India's Assam state said they launched operations to flush out insurgents in the foothills of Bhutan.

Police said the offensive was launched, as members of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam have been moving freely, carrying arms and ammunition in areas bordering the foothills of Bhutan.

"The elusive commander of ULFA's 709 battalion, Hira Sarania, is holed up somewhere in Darranga Mela adjoining the Bhutan border," Deputy Inspector-General of Police G.P. Singh said.

He said police received information about Sarania's movements only after they succeeded in recovering a cache of arms and ammunition Tuesday from suspected ULFA members on the Bhutan border.
