India: Top security for Olympic torch

NEW DELHI, April 8 (UPI) -- India said it will take all possible security measures to ensure the smooth passage of the Olympic torch in the country.

The comments follow protests in Paris Monday in which the Olympic torch was put out twice.

"All necessary arrangements will be made for security of Olympic torch when it reaches here on April 17," Interior Secretary Madhukar Gupta said.

The Interior Ministry, which reviewed security arrangements last week, said it will undertake a similar exercise before the event, which will take place on a short stretch on Rajpath near India's Parliament.

India is home to the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, along with thousands of Tibetans who fled their homeland. New Delhi is, however, trying to cultivate closer ties with Beijing and has kept mostly silent on the recent unrest in Tibet.
