Officials increase security at Khyber Pass

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, March 20 (UPI) -- U.S. defense officials are working to improve communications between Afghan and Pakistan border security forces to catch more insurgents.

The United States, Afghanistan and Pakistan are working together to step up security efforts in preparation of the Khyber Border Coordination Center opening. The 173rd Airborne Brigade's Special Troops Battalion commander, Army Lt. Col. Jeffrey Milhorn, says an X-ray machine is set to be installed at the center. That along with radio equipment and other communications technology is expected to increase chances of catching insurgent operatives trying to infiltrate the porous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Combined Joint Task Force 82 reported.

Officials estimate that with a successfully running and secure Khyber Border Coordination Center, the border crossing will also generate money to help rebuild Afghanistan.

"Estimates by experts indicate that Torkham Gate has the potential to generate $350 million in revenue each year -- money that could be put back into government projects," Army Maj. Scott Sonsalla said. "Our goal is to improve the country through prosperity and security. Closing the border to illegal traffic does both."
