BAGHDAD, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- The Iraqi interior minister said Iraqi security forces will take over control of security operations at Baghdad International Airport in April.
Lt. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, the spokesman for the Iraqi interior minister, said Iraqi officials set a deadline for foreign security forces to end their security operations at the airport, the Iraqi daily Azzaman reported.
"The Ministry of Interior has given the British firm responsible for the security of the airport a limited period of time to leave the airport premises," Khalaf said.
The security situation in Iraq prompted ministry officials to set April as a target to take over operations independently.
Baghdad International Airport handles flights from Jordan and Syria but does not typically schedule international commercial flights.
