Iraqi police on track following attack

TIKRIT, Iraq, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- An Iraqi police unit in Tikrit is back on track following a June bomb blast that destroyed part of the station and killed several officers, officials said.

The Iraqi police, with the help of a U.S. military Police Transition Team, conducted training missions in the months following the blast to recover their community presence, the U.S. military's 56th Military Police Company said in a report.

Military officials said the Iraqi police unit conducted joint operations with the Police Transition Teams to practice room-clearing tactics, basic law enforcement and weapons-handling procedures.

A military official in charge of the transition team said the Iraqi police unit is moving toward more community operations aimed at gaining the confidence of area residents.

The official said the police unit was hesitant to operate in the area for fear of militant reprisal before collaborating with the transition team, but "now, they want to be trained and out with their community."
