FALAHAT, Iraq, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. Marines are starting to deploy concrete barriers and concertina wire at control points manned by Iraqi police.

The platoon commander with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, 1st Lt. Nathan Mueller, says the strategy now focuses on preparing Iraqi units for the worst as entry control points become the target of militant attacks, the U.S. Marine Corps News said.

The local Iraqi police force leads patrols with Marine Corps trainers, and the local chief of police for the Iraqis credits the training with making the police force successful.

Many of the smaller towns and villages depended on Iraqi and U.S. troops for securing the area, but a rise in recruitment and the relative calm following the U.S. troop surge and grassroots security efforts mean local police forces are able to take on more responsibilities.

Iraqi police continue to man checkpoints, and the reinforcements on control points strengthen the perception of durability among local citizens.

"They see that the Iraqi army and police are the future," said Mueller.
