NEW DELHI, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- India says the Kashmiri separatist group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen has suffered most among militant groups in the restive state this year.
Police and security agencies said the group, which India regards as a terrorist organization, suffered the most among militant groups in Jammu & Kashmir in 2007. The group lost 34 of its top commanders and 307 members in battles with security forces this year.
"The backbone of the militancy in Jammu and Kashmir has been broken and Hizb cadres have gone into hibernation after getting demoralized," said a state police spokesman.
He said other groups whose top commanders were killed included Lashker-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Al-Badr, Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami, Tahreek-ul-Mujahideen, Al-Umar, Jamait-ul-Mujahideen, JK Freedom Force, Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, Hizb-e-Islami and Al-Barq. India regards all these groups as terrorist organizations.
