UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The United Nations has asked the Philippines to consider sending more police officers to help meet the growing demand for peacekeepers in conflict areas.
The United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations made the request to support operations in Haiti, Chad and the Central African Republic; 176 officers from the Philippine National Police were recently deployed in Timor Leste and Darfur, but U.N. Police Adviser Andrew Hughes is asking Philippine officials to consider sending more PNP officers, the Philippines government news reported.
The request for more police came during a November meeting in New York between Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo and U.N. Undersecretary General for Peacekeeping Jean Marie Guehenno.
Officials say during the meeting, Guehenno requested "Philippine assistance in helping the U.N. meet the continuing surge in the demand for peacekeeping operations worldwide," the release said.
