Iraq Press Roundup

By HIBA DAWOOD, UPI Correspondent

Al Sabah newspaper in an editorial Friday said the U.S. strategy in the region in general and in Iraq in particular was built on securing long-term U.S. interests that "ensure to it and its allies energy resources and strategic locations."

"Because of that, the U.S. Army crossed thousands of miles to come to the Gulf and locate in Iraq," it said.

It said that over the past four years, the U.S. administration set up several plans to shore up its interests -- starting with the Provisional Council and including a plan to divide Iraq on ethnic and sectarian lines.

"It is to be noticed that the plan to divide Iraq came from the U.S. Senate, which is not an unlikely decision for those who follow the Iraqi situation," the editorial said.

It also said the White House rejected the plan, which the paper called a "path toward more bloodshed and civil war.”

"Although the U.S. administration insists on the unity of Iraq and Iraqis, the plan that was proposed in the Senate only expresses the future plan of the Democrats and their strategic viewpoint in Iraq," it said.

"The question is," it added, "is this another mistake the U.S. is committing in addition to its other mistakes? Or is it a plan to divide Iraq so it is easy to control it and its natural resources?"

The editorial also said official U.S. reports issued before Sept. 11, 2001, expressed political concerns against Islamists’ statements and those who "call for confrontation against the U.S."

"It was clear since then that Iraq is the center of Islamic ideology … and one of the most important places for wealth and energy resources."

Shabab Al Iraq carried an editorial with the headline "No to the U.S. war; Where are the Arabs?"

It said that on the fifth anniversary of the congressional resolution approving the war in Iraq, thousands of "free" American people, in a protest organized by the For Peace and Justice organization, went out in 23 states demanding an "immediate end to the war in Iraq" and "other war projects."

The editorial said there were many demonstrations being held against the "insane wars" the U.S. administration is involved in "for the sake of Israel" to control the oil-producing locations in the Gulf.

"The U.S. administration reaches the above aims by trying to destroy all the independent Arab and Islamic forces that threaten Israel or oil availability, using terrorism or owning nuclear weapons as excuses even though they are no more believable," it said.

It said the conservative U.S. administration that fights the world and "spreads democracy" and supports democratic election results in Arab and Muslim countries doesn’t respect U.S. democracy.

"The U.S. Republican administration didn't listen to the people when they stood against carrying out another illogical war against Iran," the paper said.

The editorial said the U.S. administration only hears Israel's voice and the “Zionist lobby's.” It also listens to the “weapons mafias' interests,” the paper said.

"These weapons mafias make profit out of civil wars by selling their guns that are not allowed to be used against those who occupy our Arab Muslim countries in Iraq and Palestine," it said.
