NEW DELHI, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- India sent its national security adviser on a secret visit to Afghanistan to get an appraisal on the Taliban's resurgence.
The Asian Age newspaper reported Monday that Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who drew attention to the "increasing arc of instability" spearheaded by the growing Taliban presence in southern Afghanistan, sent national security adviser M.K. Narayanan to Kabul.
Narayanan expressed concern about the growing insecurity in this region to his Afghan counterpart, Zalmay Rassoul. India says it is keen to complete work on the 217-kilometer Zaranj-Delaram highway in southwestern Afghanistan. The project linking Zaranj, on the Iran border, with Kabul, Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif and Kunduz should have been completed in 2006.
Narayanan said his visit was an informal one.
"We are concerned about the safety of Indians working there. It is for this reason that the protection and care of the Indian workers has been placed under our own Indo-Tibetan Border Police commandos," Narayanan said.
