India favors close ties with Myanmar

NEW DELHI, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- India has said it favors maintaining a close relationship with Myanmar.

Describing the unrest in Myanmar as its internal affair, India’s new army chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor said the Indian army was in favor of maintaining a "close relationship" with the armed forces of Myanmar.

Asked to comment on the violent crackdown by Myanmar's military government on non-violent protesters, he said the Indian armed forces had good relations with the armed forces of Myanmar and "we are for maintaining these close relationships."

The Myanmar crackdown has killed at least 13 people and led to the jailing of hundreds; it has sparked a global outrage.
