NEW DELHI, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Australian naval chief Russ Shalders is in India to underline closer defense ties between the two countries.
As part of his five-day visit to India, Shalders met with Indian naval chief Adm. Suresh Mehta. He is also scheduled to visit the eastern naval command headquarters at Vishakhapatnam and the western naval headquarters in Mumbai, said an Indian navy official.
The official said it has been decided Indian naval officials will be sent to Australia as observers to witness two Australian naval exercises called Operation Kakadu and Operation Pacific Reach. According to the official, the two countries will participate in the forthcoming five-nation Malabar round of naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal beginning in September.
Australia will deploy two naval crafts, including a frigate and a logistics craft, in the Malabar exercises. The official said India and Australia are now working closely on the issue of maintenance of security in the Asia-Pacific region.
