Israeli copter crashes in Romania, 7 die

BUCHAREST, Romania, July 26 (UPI) -- An Israeli military helicopter on a training exercise crashed in Romania Monday with no sign of survivors among the seven personnel on board, officials said.

The Romanian news agency Agerpres reported the Israeli CH-53 helicopter, with a crew of six Israelis and one Romanian, was taking part in the Blue Sky 2010 joint Romanian-Israeli air exercise when it went down about 3:20 p.m. local time The Romanian Defense Ministry issued a statement saying search-and-rescue teams located the wreckage about 5:45 p.m. in the Fundata-Zarnesti area in central Romania.

The Romanian news agency Mediafax reported the cause of the accident wasn't known, Mediafax said.

The Israeli news agency Arutz Sheva reported Israeli defense officials approved publication of the names of the six Israeli personnel on board but they hadn't confirmed any fatalities.

An article on the Israeli military's Web site said the helicopter carried four Israeli pilots and two aerial mechanics, and one member of the Romanian air force. The Israeli service members' families had been notified, the article stated.
