One dead in southern Mexico quake

PINOTEPA NACIONAL, Mexico, June 30 (UPI) -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Oaxaca state shook southern Mexico early Wednesday, killing at least one person, authorities said.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which had initially measured the quake at 6.5, said it was centered 6 miles deep about 25 miles northeast of Pinotepa Nacional, 48 miles east-southeast of Ometepec, 51 miles south of Tlaxiaco, 74 miles west-southwest of Oaxaca and 148 miles east of Acapulco.

While hitting Mexico's southern states the hardest, the temblor was strong enough to send people streaming out of buildings as far away as Mexico City, The Christian Science Monitor reported.

"We were a bit scared in the moment, especially the foreigners, because we didn't know if it would stop," Hugo Sampedro, head of security at Hotel San Francisco in Mexico City, told the Monitor.

The online newspaper said civil protection agency officials in Oaxaca state reported a man died when a beam in his house gave way in San Andres Huaxpaltepec.

Minor damage was reported to buildings in communities along the Pacific Coast, the Monitor said.
