Brothers surrender in bizarre slaying case

GUATEMALA CITY, June 28 (UPI) -- Two Guatemalan brothers suspected of unwittingly assisting the bizarre slaying of their cousin have turned themselves in voluntarily, officials say.

The BBC reported Monday United Nations officials said a hearing will be held July 5 for Francisco and Jose Valdes Paiz, accused of hiring a contract killer at the behest of their cousin, prominent Guatemalan lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg, who was slain in May 2009.

U.N. officials say it appears the brothers were told by their cousin the contract killer was to shoot a man who was blackmailing him, and didn't know Rosenberg was planning his own death with the intent of implicating Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom.

An international commission determined in January that Rosenberg had organized his own demise to highlight unsolved slayings in Guatemala and Colom was cleared of any involvement.

Police had been looking for the brothers since December.
