Pakistan to monitor Google, Yahoo

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 25 (UPI) -- Pakistani officials said they are now monitoring Google, Yahoo, YouTube and several other major sites for content considered offensive to Muslims.

Khurram Mehran, an official with Pakistan's telecommunications authority, said individual links deemed offensive on the 24 monitored pages, which also include Amazon, MSN and Bing, will be blocked while the main pages will not be affected, the BBC reported Friday.

The announcement comes after a two-week Facebook ban was lifted in the country. The ban was lifted once Facebook blocked access to a page called "Everybody Draw Muhammad," which was focused on depictions of the Muslim prophet. Many Muslims consider depictions of the prophet to be blasphemous.
