Spain: Train plows into crowd, 12 dead

BARCELONA, Spain, June 23 (UPI) -- A train plowed into a group of people crossing tracks near Barcelona, Spain, Wednesday night, killing at least 12 people and injuring 13, authorities said.

The Spanish news agency EFE reported the 11:30 p.m. accident occurred as the speeding train was passing through Alaris Castelldefels station near Barcelona. EFE said three of the injured were in critical condition.

The train was not scheduled to stop at the station, officials said.

SkyNews reported a Catalonia regional government official said the pedestrians had just disembarked from a commuter train and were crossing the rails instead of using a tunnel, the British network said.

SkyNews said a Spanish radio station reported most of the victims were young people in town to celebrate a party marking the start of summer.

"The train was full of people like me going to the beach to celebrate the festival of San Juan," Fernando Ortega, a Colombian national and witness the event, told EFE.
