Rains, floods and slides kill 46 in China

BEIJING, June 17 (UPI) -- Storms pounding southern China this week have left at least 46 people dead and 50 missing, Civil Affairs Ministry officials said Thursday.

The heavy rains that produced flash floods and landslides also affected about 2 1/2 million other people across six provinces, with 238,000 evacuated from their homes, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The storms destroyed or damaged 33,000 homes and thousands of acres, with economic losses reaching about $398 million, Xinhua said.

The news agency said the National Meteorological Center forecasts more rain for southern China in the coming days.
