DORVAL, Quebec, June 14 (UPI) -- A mother was arraigned in Canada Monday afternoon on charges she stabbed her 19-year-old daughter in what police say may have been an "crime of honor."
CTV reported a judge ordered Johra Kaleki, a 38-year-old Afghan woman living with her family in Dorval, Quebec, to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and be detained at a secure mental facility for 30 days.
Her attorneys say she attacked her daughter with a kitchen knife Sunday morning after she stayed out late, CTV said. They said she suffered a temporary lapse in mental control.
"Investigators seem to be looking into a case of crime of honor," police Constable Anie Lemieux told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
The daughter was hospitalized in stable condition with stab wounds to her head, shoulder and arm.
Kaleki's husband and three other daughters, ages 16, 14 and 10, also were in the home when the stabbing occurred.
Kaleki did not enter a plea to the charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon authorities have leveled against her.
"Please sir, my wife is innocent!" CTV quoted Kaleki's husband as saying in a courtroom outburst.
The judge also ordered to have no contact with her children but she will be allowed contact with her husband. Her next court appearance was set for July 12.
