BEIJING, June 14 (UPI) -- Five tigers mauled a man to death and injured his son in a zoo in China's Shaanxi province, a zoo official said Monday.

Xian Qinling Wildlife Park official Jiao Congling said the animals attacked the two Sunday after they entered the tigers' zone despite signs posted telling zoo patrons not to enter the area, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

The father died at the scene from bites to the head and neck, officials said.

"The gate to the tigers' zone was open, so we walked in. Then the tigers attacked us," Xinhua quoted the son as saying.

Police detained the zoo's manager pending an investigation, the news agency said.
