Taliban killed in northern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 13 (UPI) -- Security forces killed more than two dozen suspected Taliban militants during a firefight in a village in northern Afghanistan, authorities said.

The firefight ensued Wednesday night after Afghan and international security forces pursued a senior Taliban leader into the village of Kharid-e Olya in Kunduz province, CNN reported Thursday.

There were no civilian casualties, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said.

In Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, security forces detained 40 suspected Taliban fighters and confiscated munitions after an operation in the Nawzad district Wednesday, said Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial governor. No casualties were reported.
