AHMEDABAD, India, April 20 (UPI) -- More than a dozen human fetuses, suspected to have been discarded by abortion clinics, were found near a garbage dump in Ahmedabad, India, authorities said.
Authorities said they suspect the fetuses were disposed off by abortion clinics involved in performing illegal sex determination tests, the BBC reported. Such tests are done to determine the sex of the baby before it is born.
In India, many families favor boys over girls as the former bring in dowries during weddings. Prenatal tests to determine the sex of babies and aborting female fetuses are banned in India but the practice of gender selection and selective abortion have not stopped despite the law.
The fetuses of the unborn babies have been sent for post-mortem and forensic examination, the BBC report said.
The report said the fetuses were found Monday morning with some of them in broken jars.
Ahmedabad is the largest city in the western state of Gujarat.
