U.N. team caught in Pakistani protest

The demonstrators also set upon a U.N. vehicle, an unintended target, al-Jazeera reported.

The protests continued even though the rate increases had been rescinded, officials said.

Police and other security forces used tear gas to disperse the rock-throwing demonstrators, the Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported.

Officials said protesters attacked a vehicle carrying U.N. inspectors looking into the 2007 assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The team returned to the Islamabad airport and asked for security from the U.S. embassy, sources told Dawn.

The Pakistani government rescinded the fare increases soon after protests began Thursday, al-Jazeera said. Police said many of the participants in Friday's protests were students demanding the release of demonstrators who were arrested the previous day.

During Thursday's protests, at least 13 citizens were injured when police fired into the air over demonstrators, New Times reported. Officials said six police officers were injured in the confrontations.
