Police, protesters hurt in Jerusalem riot

JERUSALEM, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Israeli police officers and a dozen Muslim protesters were reported hurt in rioting Sunday at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, authorities said.

Several dozen Muslim men barricaded themselves inside the al-Aksa Mosque of the Temple Mount compound late Saturday and began throwing rocks Sunday at police and visitors to the site, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.

Four police officers were hurt by the stones and a dozen young Palestinians by tear gas, The Jerusalem Post reported Sunday.

The Palestinians reportedly were protesting an Israeli cabinet decision to add the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron and Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem to the list of Israeli national heritage sites.

An unknown number of protesters remained in the mosque Sunday. Police have banned men under the age of 50 from visiting the site, while women and Christian and Jewish tourist groups were allowed onto the compound's grounds.
