Students threaten teachers on Facebook

Feb. 18, 2010 at 8:24 PM

PERTH, Australia, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Students at an Australian high school have posted threatening and defaming comments on Facebook about current and former teachers, authorities said.

Facebook groups for past and present students of North Albany Senior High School in West Australia featured postings with comments such as "(teachers) should be massacred by chainsaws," The Australian reported Thursday.

The student who allegedly posted that message has been identified, but no action has been taken yet, the newspaper said.

In another posting, past students identified a teacher by name and claimed he was a "pervert" who had "sleazed" on them.

The president of the State School Teachers Union, Anne Gisborn, has called for tighter controls on Facebook and similar Internet sites.

"What you've got potentially is the setting up of a kangaroo court, without the opportunity for any witness statements to be made or any defense," she said. "It can be the ruin of an individual and their professional integrity."
