Suspicious items reported on Israeli beach

JERUSALEM, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Officials said Tuesday they were investigating suspicious items washed up on an Israeli beach that earlier was the scene of a bomb scare.

Security forces were dispatched to Ashdod where explosive devices were found Monday packed into barrels that had washed up on shore, Ynetnews.com reported.

The Web site said the Rescue Coordination Center, which oversees seaborne search and rescue activities, announced Tuesday's warning over the radio.

An unnamed senior member of one of the Palestinian organizations confirmed to Ynetnews.com that the two explosive devices, each weighing about 175 pounds, were to be used in a future terror attack on an Israeli oil rig.
