Corpses decompose in Swedish hospital

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Delays in major renovation work on a hospital morgue in Sweden have resulted in corpses starting to rot and decompose, officials said.

As work was under way in recent weeks at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, south of Stockholm, bodies have not been cared for properly, thelocal.se reported Wednesday.

"The scene in there is horrifying," a source told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Bodies are badly wrapped in bloody sheets, often exposing their genitals, the source said.

The situation became so serious that personnel from a funeral home blew the whistle by posting a note on the hospital's bulletin board.

"Cover the bodies for God's sake," reads the note. "These are people we're dealing with."

Many of the root causes lie outside the hospital's control, morgue supervisor Gert Ridhagen said.

"There's some truth in the criticism. But we've received a number of deceased over the Christmas and New Year holidays. And besides, many have already been lying for a while in their homes. So the decomposition process has already begun," he told the Aftonbladet.
