Rape victim in Saudi Arabia fears lashing

DUBAI, Saudi Arabia, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Filipino worker jailed in Saudi Arabia after getting pregnant out of wedlock because she was raped fears she'll be lashed before being freed, her mother says.

Hard prison life, however, led to a miscarriage.

The woman, 35, with three children back home in the Philippines, went to Saudi Arabia to work in a dental clinic. She says she was attacked by a co-worker three months after arriving and discovered she was pregnant. Her boss turned her in and she was jailed last summer, her mother told GMANews.TV during an interview.

Islamic law imposes imprisonment for women who get pregnant out of wedlock and, after giving birth, a penalty of lashes can be determined by courts before being freed. The law applies to victims who claim to have been raped.

The case is expected to go before a judge later this month.
