'Saddam Street' upsets Iraqis

BAGHDAD, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The naming of a street in western Jordan for former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has resulted in outrage in Baghdad, officials say.

The decision by Jordanian authorities in the city of al-Karak also drew sharp criticism from officials in Kuwait, attacked by Saddam in 1990, Iraq's Press TV reported.

Iraqi lawmakers charged the move was "provocative" and the same as "inciting sedition" against Iraq. The Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq censured the action and urged a restraint of Iraq's ties with Jordan.

Jordan held close ties with Saddam's Baath government in Iraq and granted political asylum to the dictator's family after his fall and consequent execution in the wake of the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
