Earthquake strikes South Sandwich Islands

BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A 6.7-magnitude earthquake rumbled Tuesday east of the South Sandwich Islands in the Atlantic Ocean near Argentina, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was centered about 1,723 miles east-southeast of Stanley on the Falkland Islands and about 2,148 miles east-southeast of Punta Arenas, Chile, the USGS said.

The depth was about six miles.

The South Sandwich Islands, a British overseas territory, are a collection of remote islands in the south Atlantic Ocean. Most of the islands are rugged and mountainous and are permanently covered by snow and ice at higher elevations.
