GAZA, Israel, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Palestinians say they will ask for unilateral statehood in a U.N. Security Council vote but while Israel cautions that would destroy the Mideast peace process.
The Palestine Authority is campaigning for a U.N. vote backing its plan unilaterally to proclaim statehood in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem without a signed peace treaty with Israel, The Christian Science Monitor reported Sunday.
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said unilateral action by Palestine would derail the talks begun with the 1993 Oslo Accords, the Monitor said.
"There is no substitute for negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and any unilateral path will only unravel the framework of agreements between us and will only bring unilateral steps from Israel's side," he said.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the proposal could be expected to receive support from many in the international community.
