GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Police and fire officials said they suspect an arsonist may have started the fire that destroyed a school in Gothenburg, Sweden, early Saturday.

The Local said despite the involvement of nearly 50 firefighters, the Torslanda school in the city's Hisingen area couldn't be saved.

"In principle, the whole school has been destroyed," Kent Andersson of the Gothenburg Fire Department said.

Fire department officials suspect the destructive blaze may have been deliberately started in a car near the school's entrance.

Police began inquiries into the fire and a forensic investigation was also scheduled, The Local said.

No injuries were reported.
