REGINA, Saskatchewan, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- A Canadian man is suing a tanning salon in Regina, Saskatchewan, for injuries he said he sustained from a tanning bed that caught fire and trapped him inside.
The fire started Jan. 19 about three minutes into a tanning session booked by Jason Viles, the Regina Leader-post reported Tuesday.
His court statement of claim filed Monday alleges staff did nothing to help him as he wrestled with a malfunctioning lock before he was able to escape through an opening at the top of the bed, the newspaper said.
His claim alleges Viles sustained a spinal injury and a knee wound that required surgery, along with "shock, nervous trauma, mental distress, anxiety, and depression."
The amount of compensation being sought wasn't specified in the claim.
The fire caused about $300,000 damage to the salon and a neighboring business, the newspaper said.
There was no immediate response to the lawsuit from the salon owners or lawyers.
