ISTANBUL, Turkey, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Turkish prosecutors say they have released two naval officers after they were questioned about an alleged plot to assassinate superior officers.

The two lieutenants were questioned in Istanbul Wednesday about an alleged conspiracy to kill more than one admiral at Naval Forces Command.

Turkey's Today's Zaman said Thursday it remained unclear if the detentions were related to the arrests of seven other lieutenants in July on charges they planned to target two admirals.

Today's Zaman said three of the officers arrested this summer allegedly had ties to Maj. Levent Bektas, who was linked by prosecutors to the underground group Ergenekon, which faces charges of plotting to overthrow the Turkish government.
