Hague chief prosecutor visits Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A visit by chief Hague war crimes tribunal prosecutor Serge Brammertz to Serbia probably won't produce any dramatic breakthroughs, a Belgrade official says.

Dusan Ignjatovic, office director of Serbia's National Council for Hague Cooperation, told the news Web site B92 that Brammertz's two-day trip to Belgrade Wednesday may not provide any "spectacular u-turns" in the tribunal's demand that Serbia do more to bring two Balkans War criminals to justice.

"We expect that there is a demonstration and confirmation of the cooperation with the tribunal, that it is demonstrated that since June, in those aspects where it was possible, the cooperation has even been improved," Ignjatovic said.

Brammertz is making the trip as the part of The Hague tribunal's preparation of a report on Belgrade's cooperation with the body, which could make a big impact on Serbia's hopes of joining the European Union.

"Whether he will use the words 'full cooperation' or not, we can't even speculate on that at this time," Ignjatovic told B-92.

As a condition to unfreeze the EU Interim Trade Agreement with Serbia, The Netherlands is reportedly seeking the arrest of the Bosnian Serb Ratko Mladic and Croatian Serb Goran Hadzic.
