State Department steps up search for war criminals

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic will begin later this month, said the Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal at The Hague, Netherlands.

Karadzic faces 11 charges, including two counts of genocide for allegedly overseeing Serb atrocities during the conflict, including the siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were rounded up and killed by Serb forces, The Times of London reported Thursday.

His trial begins Oct. 26 at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia sitting at The Hague.

During the siege of Sarajevo, Karadzic ruled with the Bosnian Serb military commander, Gen. Ratko Mladic, who remains at large.

Karadzic was arrested last year on a bus in Belgrade, disguised behind a bushy beard and thick glasses and posing as a New Age healer.
