June 25 (UPI) -- On Sunday June 23, the world witnessed the largest full moon of the year also known as a super moon.

According to NASA, this year's super moon was up to 13.5 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the typical full moon.

The super moon phenomenon occurs when the satellite reaches its perigee, or the point of the moon's orbit when it's closest to Earth. During Monday's perigee the moon was about 221,824 miles form earth.

During the moon's apogee, the farthest distance from Earth, the moon can be as far away from the planet as 252,581 miles. The difference between the two may seem great, but some say the excitement over the phenomenon is overrated.

You can watch a video of the moon's entire perigee below courtesy of Sloo Space Camera.
