NEW YORK, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- David Carr, the New York Times media columnist who died unexpectedly last week, had lung cancer and died of complications from the disease.

His autopsy also shows heart disease was a contributing cause of death. Carr collapsed at the newspaper's headquarters and died on Thursday. He was 58 years old.

Carr had battled cancer before. He survived Hodgkin's lymphoma and wrote openly about his experiences with fighting cancer and drug addiction in his 2008 memoir, "The Night of the Gun."

Carr wrote the Media Equation column for The New York Times and was called as "the finest media reporter of his generation" by the Times' Executive Editor Dean Baquet.

Carr's wake is planned for Monday evening; his funeral will be held Tuesday morning.
