The man who shot and killed Fred William Turner as he was driving on I-4 near Orlando on Sunday claims he did it because he thought Turner was someone else.

Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies arrested Jerome Hayes of St. Cloud for killing Turner.

Hayes, 48, told authorities he shot Turner because he misstook him for someone else with whom he had gotten in a fight at a strip club. He is being held in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.

Turner, 47, who called 911 to report he was being followed on the highway, told the dispatcher he "had done nothing to cause someone to follow him," according to the Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

After Hayes fired several shots at him, Turner pulled over while the shooter fled. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Interstate 4 was closed for eight hours after the shooting.

Investigators claim Hayes, who is registered as a felon is Osceola County, turned himself in Monday morning.

Authorities are currently talking to another person who was in Hayes's vehicle.
