LAS VEGAS, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Two Western ski resorts, one in Colorado and the other near Las Vegas, Nev., opened for the season this week.
While October is par for the course in the Colorado Rockies, where the Loveland ski area is situated, it is early for Las Vegas in the Nevada desert, the Las Vegas Sun reported. The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort at Mount Charleston was only three hours behind the Colorado resort, starting the lifts running at noon Wednesday.
"It feels great to tee it up with the Colorado guys," said Craig Baldwin, base operations manager at the Vegas resort. "This season's gonna be good."
Baldwin said this is the earliest opening ever at the resort. Last year, the season began the day after Thanksgiving, a more typical opening date.
The opening was a modest one, with only one beginner's slope available. Josh Beam, the maintenance manager, and a crew spent three nights putting in 14 hours each time making snow to prepare that slope.
