SANTO, Vanuatu, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Five notable earthquakes struck the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu during an 11-hour period Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The latest sizable quake had a magnitude of 6.1, and was centered about 228 miles north of of Santo, Vanuatu; 395 miles north-northwest of Port-Vila, Vanuatu, and 1,328 miles east of Port Moresby, Papua, New Guinea, USGS data indicated.
The latest major quake was preceded by a 7-magnitude temblor, recorded 181 miles north-northwest of Santo, Vanuatu; 352 miles north-northwest of Port-Vila, Vanuatu, and 1,308 miles east-southeast of Port Moresby, Papua, New Guinea, the USGS said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, CNN reported. The center issued then retracted a tsunami warning and watch.
"We felt the quake, but did not take too much notice as we live with shakes every week," John Nicholls of Vanuatu Hotels told CNN in an e-mail.
Vanuatu is about 1,100 miles east of northern Australia.
