Health bills move forward, proponents say

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Democratic proponents of overhauling U.S. healthcare say they see momentum, though five rival proposals must be melded into a filibuster-proof version.

The Senate Finance Committee is set to approve its healthcare bill this week, The New York Times reported Sunday. This would provide subsidized health benefits to millions now uninsured and the government would also move to slow the growth of health spending.

There are still two Senate bills and three bills in the House to bring together. The overhaul would restructure one-sixth of the U. S. economy and would affect almost every American, business, doctor and hospital in the country. Proponents must garner 60 votes in the Senate to avoid a filibuster.

Republicans in opposition said they will fight the bills at every turn.

President Obama said Saturday the overhaul would create jobs as it bolstered small businesses.

So far, three House committees approved healthcare bills, as did the Senate health panel.

Democrats returned to Washington after hearing from constituents during the August recess determined to get the final bills passed this year.
