WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A Republican Michigan congresswoman said Saturday President Barack Obama's economic stimulus plan has been a bust.
Rep. Candice Miller said in the GOP's weekly radio address that cutting business taxes would energize small businesses much more quickly than larger government spending programs.
"You know, Washington Democrats' job-killing agenda makes me think they are living on a different planet from the families living in America's suffering heartland," said Miller, who added that plans for a cap-and-trade program to cut greenhouse gases would cut U.S. jobs instead.
Miller, who noted the current U.S. jobless rate is "teetering on the verge of 10 percent" and is 15.2 percent in her state, said Americans had been "promised" the stimulus would keep unemployment from topping 8 percent. However, the national jobless rate was already 7.6 percent in January when Obama was just taking office and hit 8.1 percent in February, the month the stimulus package was passed.
The recession started in December 2007.
