Arrests made in India caste massacre

AMAUSI, India, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Police in India Saturday announced the arrest of 11 suspects in the slayings of 16 people in Khagaria district this week.

The suspects include the alleged mastermind of the Thursday night massacre in which members of the Kurmi caste in the village of Amausi were tied up and executed. More arrests were expected.

The Indo-Asian News Service reported the slayings were blamed on members of the Maoist party, an outlawed political group made up of members of a landless caste. As many as 50 people may have been involved.

The killings, which included five children, sparked a strike Saturday that was organized by opposition leaders that largely shut down the district.
