Victims of violent unrest buried in Guinea

CONAKRY, Guinea, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Residents of Conakry, Guinea, say 57 victims of a recent clash between demonstrators and soldiers were buried Friday amid heavy tension.

The Integrated Regional Information Networks said residents of the capital city described various atrocities allegedly committed by soldiers during recent confrontations.

"We saw soldiers walking on cadavers," one unidentified resident alleged regarding Monday's events.

"I was completely destroyed by the brutality I saw. If I had a bomb that day I would have pulled a kamikaze," another anonymous resident offered.

The military junta in Guinea insists the 57 victims buried Friday in a mass ceremony died of asphyxiation during a stampede of area residents.

Yet some local residents insist people are being hunted throughout the capital by soldiers apparently intent on civil war, IRIN reported.

"We fear civil war. There were militias who were out the next day going through neighborhoods with machetes," an unidentified Guinea resident said.
