SEATTLE, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A union representing 16,000 registered nurses in Washington state has filed a federal lawsuit against MultiCare Health System over flu shots, officials say.

MultiCare implemented a mandatory flu vaccination policy which the union says will force nurses to get flu shots or wear masks as a condition of employment.

"MultiCare's unilateral implementation of this policy blatantly ignores their legal obligation to bargain with the union," an official of the Washington State Nurses Association told KOMO-TV, Seattle.

The lawsuit seeks an injunction to stop the policy from being implemented at both Tacoma General and Good Samaritan hospitals. The union says further any such policy with which it generally agrees should be overseen by the state or federal government.
