Kenya: Will aid election violence probe

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The government of Kenya announced Friday it would cooperate with the United Nations in prosecuting those behind deadly violence after the 2007 election.

The announcement by Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo came two days after the International Criminal Court in The Hague said it would unilaterally seek and prosecute instigators of the rampage that killed more than 1,300 people, the BBC reported.

The court already had a list of suspects which former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan gave the government in July, the report said.

Kilonzo said the government would welcome the international court to Nairobi.

"The ICC can sit in Kenya and we do not have to surrender anyone -- we just need to arrest them, put them in cells and take them before the court when that time comes," Kilonzo told reporters.

Annan is scheduled to meet coalition partners President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga Sunday on coordinating the prosecution, the report said.
